OUR STORY

Picture
After several of us installed solar panels at our public and affordable housing properties, we approached McCormack Baron Ragan about our desire to build our own company that would create local jobs and improve the environment of our communities.

We did not know how to start a business, but we were committed to creating GREEN COLLAR JOBS in our neighborhoods and to developing a business model that would invest in our communities.

With their support, we launched GREEN STREETS, named to reflect our commitment to the environment and our roots as young men and women working together, through our neighborhood turfs, to beat the odds.

OUR START
Originally there was no recycling or composting at Bernal Dwellings, Hayes Valley and Plaza East. With support from MBR, Urban Strategies and local professionals including Citizen Film, REDF and Recology, we used our drive and talent to develop a successful GREEN WASTE MANAGEMENT company.

Our expertise will benefit your property or business through a waste audit and reduction, curb beautification, a reduced trash bill & professional & friendly service. Join us in developing our innovative social enterprise and invest in our communities and create jobs.

OUR FOUNDERS
An uncertain partner asked us if GREEN STREETS would succeed. Demorio Lee, Plaza East resident replied, “We don’t have a choice.”

GREEN STREETS has allowed Tyrone Mullins, Operations Supervisor to overcome adversity and plan for the future: “Green Streets has allowed me to set personal and professional goals, which I had never done before.”

From being looked at as a nuisance and overcoming adversity to becoming leaders, we are giving back and building a reputable business. This is our company and we are building it from the ground up.  We are changing behavior and our fellow residents now contribute to the environment; and we've been able to make our communities safer.  We support each other as we face challenges like returning from jail or prison, addressing our personal shortcomings, learning professional work skills and expanding our business.

DIVERSION
In a yearly average, GREEN STREETS has been able to reduce landfill waste on average by 70%. GREEN STREETS can help you lower your trash bill and improve your property and your community.

Prior to GREEN STREETS Bernal Dwellings, Hayes Valley and Plaza East properties had 45,000 gallons of trash hauled away every YEAR!
GREEN STREETS is responsible for reducing trash bills and diverting 60,960 gallons of trash into recycling and compost.

In addition to integrated waste management, recycling/composting, grounds keeping and janitorial services; GREEN STREETS also has started valet composting at all three sites which has been successful.  Please contact us, we are eager to bring our services to your business and community!

OUR PARTNERS
Green Streets has benefitted tremendously from strong partners including McCormack Baron, REDF, Recology, the City & County of San Francisco and Coneybeare, and funders and clients including John Stewart Company, ArtPlace America, Arthur M. Blank Foundation, Creative Work Fund, Fledgling Fund, Fleishhacker Foundation, San Francisco Environment, San Francisco Foundation and Silicon Valley Foundation.  Behind the success of Green Streets are our two main collaborators, Urban Strategies, Inc. and Citizen Film.
